Hearth Stool Making
Haarlem Shop, Wirksworth, Derbyshire
May 3rd & 10th or 4th & 11th
The wonderful folk at the Haarlem homewares store are hosting me and two groups of four students over the first two weekends in May to make a nice little vernacular stool.
Sometimes called a milking stool, or a creepie, this ancient form is an excellent introduction to the tools and techniques used in full-on windsor chair making. With a little discussion on material selection and design we’ll split up a fresh ash log and shave the green wood into stool legs using a drawknife and a shave horse. After these have dried in my little kiln we’ll come back the next weekend to finish shaping the legs and seat before assembling using staked joinery and wedges to make a stool that should last 300 years.
